Does Hemp Contain THC?

Cultivation of hemp spans back thousands of years ago. Over the years, hemp has become one of the world’s most popular crops due to its versatility.

Many people erroneously assume that hemp is the same as marijuana. Of course, you wouldn’t blame them since they are both from the cannabis plant.

Our experts at Happy Garden CBD have taken the time to research if hemp does contain THC to provide you with valuable insights you would need.

Hemp-derived products ranging from beauty products to food supplements have continued to flood the market.

As a consumer of these products, you must understand what hemp contains to ensure you shop with confidence.

Before we provide an answer to the question, let’s  put the following terms into perspective.

What Is Hemp?

The hemp plant is a species of Cannabis Sativa. It is also known as industrial hemp and is often cultivated for edible seeds or fibre.

What is THC?

THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is a compound found in the cannabis plant that is psychoactive and delivers a sense of being high.

Despite being associated with many stigmas, some studies show that THC may hold a host of health benefits.

Difference Between Hemp And Marijuana

The main difference between hemp and marijuana is the chemical composition. The cannabis plant has over 100 cannabinoids, with hemp and marijuana having different cannabinoid profiles.

The fundamental factor determining whether the plant is hemp or marijuana relies on the THC levels and spectrums. As earlier mentioned, THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is the psychoactive chemical compound that gives marijuana its intoxicating effects.

THC levels in marijuana can reach as high as 30%. Hemp also contains a wide range of cannabinoids, including THC. However, THC levels in hemp are no more than 0.3% and not high enough to cause any intoxicating effects.

Similarly, hemp also produces a nonintoxicating cannabinoid ( CBD) known for its therapeutic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Does Hemp Contain THC?

The answer is yes. Hemp contains small amounts of THC that cannot create any psychoactive effects.

Some countries determine hemp by the amount of THC concentration it has. For example, industrial hemp is defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC in the US. In the European Union, the limit is 0.2% THC.

Is Hemp Legal In The US?

The Farm Bill of 2018 came as a breakthrough in the cultivation and processing of hemp. The law succeeded in removing hemp from the Schedule 1 list of Controlled Substances Act.

According to the 2018 Farm Bill, legal hemp is defined as cannabis with a very low THC concentration on the dry weight. Before signing the 2018 Farm Bill, there was no clear and legal distinction between hemp-derived CBD and THC.

The law allowed growers to cultivate, process, and transport hemp for commercial and noncommercial purposes across state lines. Today, the US is the third-largest producer of hemp behind China and Canada.
